Commercial Vehicle RC Validity Check — Vahan Portal Guide (2026)

Buying a used commercial truck? Renewing your RC? Verifying a lorry before a payment? This guide walks you through checking commercial vehicle RC validity on the official Vahan portal — in under 2 minutes, from your phone.

What "RC validity" means for a commercial vehicle

Every registered vehicle in India has a Registration Certificate (RC) — the pink or Smart Card issued by the RTO. For a private car, the RC is valid for 15 years and then renewable. For a commercial vehicle (truck, taxi, bus, tempo), RC validity is tied to two things:

  • Registration validity — normally 15 years from date of first registration for HCV, sometimes shorter for LCV
  • Fitness certificate validity — 2 years initial, then 1 year at a time. Without a valid fitness certificate, the RC is effectively invalid for commercial use.

So when someone asks "is my commercial vehicle's RC valid?", they usually mean: is the registration active AND is the fitness in force?

How to check commercial vehicle RC validity on Vahan portal (step by step)

Step 1 — Open Vahan citizen services

Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in. This is the official Ministry of Road Transport and Highways portal — free, no signup for basic search.

Step 2 — Choose "Know Your Vehicle Details"

On the homepage there's a "Know Your Vehicle Details" link. This is what you want — not the login/registration section.

Step 3 — Enter registration number

Full registration number (e.g. GJ01AB1234), no spaces. Complete the captcha and submit.

Step 4 — Read the results

The response shows:

  • Registration number and vehicle class
  • Registration date and "Registration Up To" — this is the RC validity date
  • Fitness "Valid Up To" — the fitness certificate expiry
  • Insurance validity
  • Pollution (PUC) validity
  • National / State Permit expiry (for commercial vehicles that carry a permit)
  • Vehicle class — "Goods Carrier", "Passenger Carrier" etc — this is how to identify if the vehicle is commercial from the RC

How to identify a commercial vehicle from its RC

The RC's "Vehicle Class" field tells you. Any of these = commercial:

  • Goods Carrier (LGV, MGV, HGV, HTV)
  • Passenger Carrier (Taxi, Auto Rickshaw, Motor Cab, Maxi Cab, Bus)
  • Educational Institution Bus
  • Ambulance

Non-commercial classes: LMV, LMV-Car, LMV-2WNT (motorcycle). If the RC shows one of these, it's a private vehicle and can't legally carry paid freight or passengers.

What "RC number means" — decoding the format

Every Indian RC number follows the pattern SS DD LL NNNN:

  • SS — 2-letter state code (GJ = Gujarat, MH = Maharashtra, DL = Delhi, KA = Karnataka…)
  • DD — 2-digit district / RTO code (01 = state capital's RTO, 02–99 = other district RTOs)
  • LL — 1–3 letter series (AA, AB, … ZZ)
  • NNNN — 4-digit unique number within the series

So GJ01AB1234 = Gujarat, Ahmedabad RTO, series AB, vehicle 1234.

Red flags when verifying a used commercial vehicle's RC

  • Fitness expired — commercial vehicle can't legally ply; renewal after gap needs re-testing
  • Permit expired — no legal freight until renewed
  • Insurance expired — huge liability if accident happens before you insure
  • PUC expired — small fine but easy to fix
  • Vehicle class mismatch — seller says "16-wheeler" but RC shows "MGV" (medium goods vehicle) — hard to spot without checking
  • Owner name mismatch — always cross-check with the seller's PAN / Aadhaar
  • Chassis / engine number mismatch — inspect the physical vehicle against the RC

Do this automatically, for every truck in your fleet

Running one truck? Manual Vahan check once a year is fine. Running 5+ trucks? You'll miss a fitness expiry sooner or later — and the penalty for plying an unfit commercial vehicle is ₹10,000 + potential seizure.

FleetHisab auto-fetches RC, fitness, insurance, permit and PUC expiry dates for every truck in your fleet directly from Vahan, and sends WhatsApp alerts 15, 7 and 1 day before each expiry — in Hindi, English or Gujarati. No manual portal checking, no missed dates.

Download FleetHisab — free trial for 1 truck, or check what it does on the product overview page.
